"It was an 18-to-party, 21-to-drink and “I wish someone would tell me to put out my blunt in this club” crowd at Icon Lounge on Saturday night. Dudes with fitted caps, button ups, and of course, white tees, sang along with Jeezy, T.I. and Gucci Mane while chicks in spandex, lace and stilettos flooded the dance floor to see just how low they could go. (There was one girl in leggings that deserves mention for killing the stanky leg). And because everyone was not interested in — or capable of — rocking with it or leaning with it, the bar and couches along the wall served as a posting station for many.

While this might just sound like a typical club scene in the A, it was actually a celebration for the release of the Mona Mika mixtape, from homegrown artist and one-third of the Girls Club, Mika Means. Well, at least for the VIP section of the club it was. Close friends — including D. Woods of the now defunct Danity Kane, supporters and industry folks — gathered on the dimly lit second floor of the club to celebrate the Universal/Motown artist. The only one missing was Shanell, newest member of Young Money and rumored love interest of Lil Wayne, though she could’ve been in the cut somewhere. Surprisingly, there were very few hanger-ons in Mean’s entourage. Her camp seemed very authentic. And so did she.

Rocking a sparkly sequined top, ripped blue jeans and stiletto booties, she glided through the club with a full face of flawless make-up and curly hair. But she was still approachable as she hugged friends, excused herself when interrupted during conversations and posed for pics throughout the night. Means seemed genuinely happy. It probably had something to due with the fact that she has an untitled album due out later this year. She says Atlanta has been extremely supportive in her career and she even credits her flair to the city. “Atlanta is creative and saturated with talent,” she said. “I’m inspired by the great talent here.”

Means’ music, which she describes as a “fusion of hip-hop, R&B and pop,” is an outgrowth of the work she’s been doing in front of the camera and behind it. She has been a professional dancer for the Game, Snoop Dogg, Ciara, and Neyo and has written, alongside the Girls Club, for Kelis, One Chance, 3LW, and Danity Kane. Considering the direction Means seems to be headed, Atlanta clubs could one day be packed with fans singing and gyrating to her melodies on a Saturday night.
